8 Session Private Pottery Lessons

Session 1:

We will learn the process of working with clay, the importance of wedging and how to wedge our clay. We will also practice centering on the wheel and the importance of centering. If time allows we will get used to working with clay by using a pinch pot method to make a bowl form.

Session 2:

After learning how to center on the wheel we will now work on making bowl and mug forms on the pottery wheel.

Session 3:

After allowing our mug form to get leather hard, I will demonstrate how to pull handles for your mugs. We will attach our handles to our mugs using a slip and scoring technique. During this session we will also learn how to slab roll clay and create a dinner plate.

Session 4:

We will start off the class learning about coil forms and draw a sketch of a form you’d like to make. I will demonstrate the project and help assist you in the process of this project. After our hands are warmed up we will switch to the pottery wheel for the second hour of class. If student doesn’t finish there coil bowl project we will continue them in session 5.

Session 5:

If we did not get to finish any past projects we will finish today. Based off of the  students skill level we will do at least one of the following: make a box, chip n’ dip dish, ornaments, more bowl forms, and more options available. Session 6 & 7:

During these sessions we will create students choice of project(s). Whether you’d like to work more on the wheel or with your hands the choice is yours.

Session 8 (FINAL Session):

Last but certainly not least we will wipe, wax, and glaze all your projects in preparation of the last step in the firing process. Here we will learn how to apply and identify different types of glazes. Students will also learn how to apply a trace transfer image to one of their creations.Student will get to choose their clay bodies ahead of time and have 25lbs of clay to work with throughout the sessions.

Next steps:

Your creations will be dipped in a clear glaze, making them food and drink safe. Pieces will be ready for pick up/drop off about 3 weeks after the last session. Included with session:Apron, Starter Tool Set, Pottery Journal, 25lbs of clay of choice (white or tan)
